Protean Threat

The last few albums have seen a bifurcation in the Osees sound. Face Stabber had both of the paths, often back to back, with stretched out jams once in a while and punk rock, Coachwhips almost sometimes, moments in between. Protean Threat, which is the official recording of the rehearsal that they released to YouTube earlier this year, is the faster, heavier Osees.

Protean Threat comes off as pointy and aggressive as a whole package, the lyricism is steeped in a morbid exasperation with worldly conditions, unsurprising given the context of the past year. Despite that all the album's themes are hardly defeatist, as is clear with the instrumentals there's a consistent fighting spirit throughout all 38 minutes of punk/kraut grooves and noise that don't overstay a second.

Addendum to Protean Threat

Dark Weald

Two tracks performed during the Protean Threat live rehearsal video but ultimately not included on the album were subsequently released elsewhere. “Dark Weald” came out as a limited edition lathe cut vinyl single on August 23, 2020, and was later released digitally. A cover of the Alice Cooper & The Spiders song “Don’t Blow Your Mind” then came out on the band’s Weirdo Hairdo.

Panther Rotate

Panther Rotate, a remix album featuring experimental reworkings of several tracks from Protean Threat.
